Repurposing for Purpose

The Rendine Modular VIC Project

In a groundbreaking initiative that redefines sustainable construction, Weathertex is proud to be involved in the Rendine Modular VIC Project; a collaborative venture alongside Rendine Modular, PrefabAUS, Sustainability Victoria, and the Victorian Government.

This visionary project centres on the repurposing of decommissioned school modular frames, structures once bound for landfill, now being reimagined as safe, durable, and adaptable spaces; ideal for short-term crisis accommodation and other community-centric uses.

Project Objectives

  • Divert waste from landfill through intelligent repurposing of materials
  • Demonstrate scalable sustainable construction practices within the modular building industry
  • Support vulnerable communities by creating functional, transitional living spaces
  • Highlight the environmental and performance benefits of Australian made materials, such as Weathertex cladding

Why Weathertex?

Weathertex’s natural, no chemicals timber cladding was a perfect fit for this project, offering:

  • A better-than-zero carbon footprint, supporting the project’s sustainability mandate
  • Low maintenance and high durability, ideal for modular applications
  • No chemicals—free from silica, glues, resins or formaldehyde
  • Aesthetic appeal with a natural timber finish that enhances the lived experience of occupants

Impact and Legacy

This initiative represents a significant shift in how modular building materials are perceived and used. By aligning government support, innovative design thinking, and a sustainability first mindset, the Rendine Modular VIC Project sets a new benchmark in circular construction.

Key achievements include:

  • Redirection of modular frames from landfill to life-enhancing solutions
  • Integration of renewable, compliant building materials like Weathertex
  • Acceleration of social and environmental outcomes through public-private partnerships
