Katrina and the Built 8.3 star energy-efficient home

8.3 star energy-efficient home

When Katrina decided to build her dream home, energy efficiency wasn’t just a checkbox on her wishlist; it was the foundation of her entire vision. What emerged from careful planning and strategic design choices is an impressive 8.3-star energy-efficient residence that dramatically reduces her environmental footprint while delivering real-world comfort and savings.

“I really wanted to build an 8-star efficiency home. I sort of had some interactions with other clients who had been doing this realm of energy efficiency, and I thought, I’m going to be able to do that,” Katrina explains.

The Challenge

Many people dream of building an energy-efficient home, but we’re faced with a common dilemma: how to balance upfront construction costs with long-term energy savings while maintaining aesthetic appeal and liveability. Traditional building methods typically deliver homes with ratings between 5-6 stars. Adequate for compliance but far from optimal for energy performance.

But Katrina was determined to prove that pushing beyond these standards didn’t require an unlimited budget.

“Here’s the thing, it doesn’t have to be. Building smart doesn’t mean blowing the budget, it just means thinking ahead. The way your house is positioned on the block, the materials you choose, and how you plan your insulation and ventilation can all have a huge impact without costing the earth.”

Katrina took a whole-house systems approach, working with a prefab company where energy efficiency is thought of from the very beginning of the design. This meant energy performance informed fundamental decisions about orientation, floor plan, and material selection rather than being retrofitted as an afterthought.

“I work with a prefab company where energy efficiency is baked into the design from the start. We use clever layouts, passive solar design, and quality materials that help reduce your power bills for years to come. Sometimes it’s just a few strategic choices that make all the difference.”

The Materials: Why Weathertex Made the Cut

Over the past few months, Weathertex has had the pleasure of being involved in Katrina’s latest project. Her 8.3-star energy-efficient home features Weathergroove 150 Natural stained in Intergrain Charred Black

“It’s 100% natural Aussie hardwood with a touch of natural wax, no nasty chemicals or resins. It’s lightweight, super easy to install (your tradies will thank you), and has that beautiful timber texture that just feels right on a home,” Katrina notes.

But the choice wasn’t just about aesthetics. For Katrina, the environmental credentials were equally important.

“Plus, it’s one of the most environmentally friendly claddings you can get. Low embodied energy, sustainable, and Australian-made. Compared to other cladding materials that need special cutting tools, extra safety measures, and have a higher environmental impact, Weathertex is my go-to every time.”

The Design Details: Where Function Meets Form

One feature that Instagram users loved was how the front door and garage seamlessly blended into the rest of the home,a perfect example of how thoughtful material choice enables creative design.

“I fell in love with the idea of a concealed garage roller door and a hidden front door, and the real magic is the black cladding. You honestly cannot see the roller or the front door. Delivery drivers have literally asked, where’s the door? I love it,” Katrina comments.

Katrina’s project proves that high-performance, sustainable building isn’t reserved for luxury budgets or architectural showpieces.

“So no, it’s not just for the rich or fancy builds. It’s for anyone who wants to live comfortably, reduce their footprint, and save money long term. Affordable, efficient, and beautiful.”

Her 8.3-star home stands as evidence that with strategic planning, smart material choices, and a willingness to think differently about the building process, energy-efficient living is within reach for more Australians than ever before.

Guulabaa Koala Conservation and Research Facility

The Black Summer Bushfires of 2019–2020 devastated Australia’s wildlife, displacing or killing an estimated three billion animals, including 64,000 koalas. In response to this ecological catastrophe, Guulabaa – Place of Koala was conceived as Australia’s first purpose-built wild koala breeding and rehabilitation centre.
