SECTION 2: HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
The boards in their intact state are not classified as hazardous according to the criteria of Worksafe Australia.
Manual Handling:
Handling the product without the gloves may give rise to splinters.
Wood Dust:
Wood dust may become hazardous while being handled by
a downstream user and as a result of downstream activities
(machining and cutting), which creates small particles. The main
health effect related to this product emerges from prolonged
exposure to fine wood dust. It may cause irritation to the nose,
throat, eyes and skin. Some woods may also be sensitizer, and
some individuals may develop allergic dermatitis or asthma.
Extended inhalation of wood dust may increase the risk of nasal
and paranasal sinus cancers.

ACUTE HEALTH RISKS OF WOOD DUST EXPOSURE
Ingestion
Unlikely to occur but swallowing the dust may result in abdominal discomfort.
Eye
The dust and vapour may be irritating to the eyes causing discomfort and redness, tearing and blurred vision.
Skin
The dust and vapour may irritate the skin, resulting in itching and occasionally a red rash. Allergic dermatitis may occur.
Inhalation
The dust and vapour may irritate the nose, throat and lungs, especially in people with upper respiratory track or chest complaints. Asthma may occur.
Chronic health risks of repeated exposures over many years to uncontrolled wood dusts and vapours from these boards
may increase the risk of allergic dermatitis, asthma or chronic nose or throat irritation in some people. The risk of nasal or
paranasal sinus cancers may be increased but if the work practices noted in this SDS are followed, no chronic health effects
are anticipated.
Paraffin Wax:
Wax vapour may be irritating to the nose and throat, eyes and skin if the board is heated to 120 degrees or more.

SECTION 4. FIRST AID MEASURES
ROUTE OF EXPOSURE
FIRST AID INSTRUCTION
Ingestion
If dust is swallowed call physician or poison information centre for most current update. Don’t induce vomiting. If stomach discomfort or pain persists, seek medical treatment.
Eye Irritation
Flush with flowing clean water for at least 15 minutes, if symptoms persist seek immediate medical attention.
Skin Irritation
Wash affected area with mild soap and water. Seek medical help if irritation, rash or dermatitis persists.
Inhalation
Leave the dusty area. Seek medical help if persistent irritation, coughing or breathing difficulties occur.
SECTION 5. FIREFIGHTING MEASURES
Note: Weathertex hardboard is combustible but difficult to ignite.

• Burning or smouldering boards or dust can generate carbon dioxide and other pyrolysis products typical of burning organic material
• Natural decomposition of dust wood may produce toxic gases and oxygen deficient atmosphere in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas

• Avoid build-up of dust and keep all storage and work areas well ventilated
• Avoid sources of radiant heat and flame; avoid sparks and sources of ignition in all electrical equipment especially with dust extraction equipment
• People must not smoke in storage or work areas

SECTION 6. ACCIDENTAL RELEASE MEASURES
Wood Dust:
All work with theses boards should be carried out in such way as to minimise the generation of dust and vapour.

• Prevent dust from entering drains and waterways
• Work up-wind and increase ventilation
• If spilt, collect and dispose appropriately
SECTION 7. HANDLING AND STORAGES
No special handling precautions are required. Weathertex Hardboard should be stored in dry, ventilated areas, away from heat sources, flames, sparks and other sources of ignition.
SECTION 8. EXPOSURE CONTROLS AND PERSONAL PROTECTION
Engineering control:
All work should be carried out in such way that it minimise generation of dust and vapour. Under factory conditions, machining
should be done with equipment fitted with exhaust device capable of removing wood dust and vapour at the source. Hand
power tools should be fitted with dust bags and in well ventilated area.
Eye Protection
Goggles or safety glasses are recommended when cutting or machining the
boards.
Skin Protection
Cloth or leather gloves are recommended when cutting or machining the
boards.
Respiratory Protection
Class P2 mask/respirator used in accordance with AS/NZS 1715 will prevent
inhalation of dust particles when cutting and machining boards.
Work/hygiene Practices
Machining equipment should be fitted with dust collection devices and used
in well ventilated areas. Follow good hygienic and housekeeping practices.
Wood dust can be vacuumed, shovelled or swept to avoid accumulation.
